The disappearance of Śrīla Prabhupāda

The anniversary of the day Prabhupāda left this world, in Vrindavan, in 1977.

What is celebrated

Śrīla Prabhupāda left this world on 14 November 1977 in Vrindavan, surrounded by his disciples and translating the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam until his last days.

Vaishnavas speak of “departure” or “disappearance”, not death: the teacher is no longer visible, but remains present in his teachings. That is why the day combines the sadness of separation with gratitude.

How it is celebrated

  • Devotees fast until noon.
  • Devotees share memories of Prabhupāda and read passages from his life.
  • Flowers are offered before his picture and ārati is held.

In 2026 it falls on 13 November 2026, according to the calendar calculated for London. Vaishnava dates follow the moon and change every year: check them in the calendar. Each temple organises its own programme; ask at your nearest one.
